What is the purpose of a baby shower?

A baby shower is a special occasion usually hosted by the expectant mother's closest friends and family members, to celebrate the upcoming birth of a new baby. Traditionally, a baby shower is held in the last trimester of pregnancy, but today some parents are having multiple showers throughout their pregnancy and for post-birth. Baby showers can be held in person or virtually, with modern "virtual" showers now a popular way to connect people near and far for the celebration.

At its core, the purpose of a baby shower is to provide support for moms-to-be, helping them prepare for their new arrival. This includes gifts such as clothing and gear for their little one. Through games and activities, baby showers can also give participants an opportunity to learn more about parenting and share words of wisdom they have picked up along the way as parents themselves. The atmosphere at a baby shower should aim to be merry - filled with laughter and joyous celebration!

How long before the baby's due date should a baby shower be held?

The ultimate question when it comes to baby showers is 'when should you throw one?' It's a natural question to ask, because hosting a baby shower requires quite a lot of preparation and planning. But how long before the baby's due date should the baby shower be held?

The general consensus with many mums-to-be is that the shower should take place between four weeks and two months before the due date. This timeframe allows enough time for all the necessary diaper, food and other items that are necessary for caring for a newborn. It also gives family and friends time to make travel arrangements if needed. Moreover, it ensures that the mum-to-be can enjoy the joyous occasion in relative comfort before she enters her third trimester which can become quite taxing from a physical perspective.

However, there's no hard and fast rule when it comes to organising a baby shower around this timeframe. For example, if you're planning a baby shower for someone who is expecting twins or triplets, then you may want to give yourself more time as this will require more preparation and organisation on your part. You can also leave the date up to the mum-to-be - if she prefers it sooner or later than the usual four weeks - 2 month mark, then by all means adjust your plans accordingly.

There's one golden rule with any kind of party planning though; always check with the mum-to-be before making any final arrangements! Never presume when it comes to organising her special day - chances are she doesn't want everyone's last minute panic turning into her stress as well!
